you are here iconFor our sixth wedding anniversary my husband, Kendall, and I celebrated by taking a trip to Maine.  Everyone asked us, “Why Maine?”  To which we replied, “Why not?”  It was actually a location that both of us had on our list of places we would like to see, and that was all the inspiration we needed.

As it turns out, it’s a bit difficult to plan a trip to a place that you don’t know much about, or even what you want to see while there.  After a great deal of researching, and some hair pulling, we managed to book our trip and found ourselves in Portland, Maine.  We didn’t go the bed-in-breakfast route, or even stay in the countryside.  Instead, we stayed in a hotel in downtown Portland that had a scenic view of the port.  This suited us just fine since we enjoyed watching the boats and various watercrafts go to and fro while we were there. (It doesn’t take much to entertain us…)

Naturally, as soon as we settled into our new accommodations, we were ready and raring to go explore our surroundings.  Unfortunately, Mother Nature was not interested in our plans…  It rained on us the entire time, with the exception of our last day.  That didn’t slow us down, however; I simply broke out the umbrella and rain gear for my camera and we continued to go adventuring anyway.

Maine was everything we anticipated – even in the wet conditions.  Our first destination was the Portland Head Light; which I’m told is the number one photographed lighthouse in America.  I find that easy to believe, and I happily became yet another photographer to partake in its grandeur.  During the course of our trip we actually got to see six lighthouses altogether.  My favorite was the Portland Breakwater Light or the “Bug Light” as the locals call it because it’s as cute as a bug.

In addition to searching for nearby lighthouses, we also braved the weather and took a boat tour of the port.  The wind and the rain made for quite an experience, but we had a good time in spite of ourselves.  I was hoping that we would get to see seals while we were out, but we had no such luck.

On another journey we went on a quest for seafood, and in Maine, that’s not hard to find.  It’s only everywhere.  Kendall enjoys seafood and found the lobster pretty tasty.  I, on the other hand, do not like seafood and don’t eat anything that swims.  I did, however, eat a sugar cookie that looked like a lobster, but I was told by family and friends that cookies don’t count!

As I mentioned previously, the sun did make an appearance our last day there.  We took full advantage of the dry weather and walked from our hotel to Portland’s downtown district, “The Old Port.”  While there we had lunch at a little pub and did some shopping.  The historic area was quite charming and we were glad to see Maine with some sunshine before we left.

In all, it was a great trip!
