I never really understood what all the hype was about when it came to The Greenbrier … until I stayed there. I’m not a fancy or frilly person. In fact, I’m pretty down to earth so it just seemed a bit over the top (and yes, a tad pretentious). Well, I had the opportunity to go there for a short stay and I will admit that I enjoyed it thoroughly – although I was very much out of my element!
Upon my arrival it I was naturally taken with the building and the grounds. They are quite stunning and certainly radiate a regal and lasting impression (and we all know how much I love old structures…). I had seen pictures, of course, but viewing it in person really makes all difference. The interior, on the other hand, is also quite striking, but in a very different way. Everyone has their own unique taste, and I surely don’t want to insult anyone (particularly the interior designer, as I understand they are quite renowned), but I have to admit that it looks a lot like my great Aunt Marie decorated the place. You walk in the door and it sort of takes your breath away.
Now while I wouldn’t want my home decorated in such a fashion, the ostentatious colors, design, and décor were fabulous from a photographer’s standpoint. As usual, I looked like quite the tourist snapping away with my camera pointed at every odd texture, garish color contrast, and extravagant layout. I had a field day. I also have to say that it all kind of grows on you too. After awhile I didn’t even notice the bold, chunky, blue wallpaper plastered all over my room.
Well enough about the scenery; that’s not the whole experience. And that’s exactly what makes The Greenbrier so special …the experience. Everything is the best – from the turn down service and mint on your plush fluffy pillow every night, to the scent of the delicious citrus shampoo and other bathroom amenities.
Most notably, the staff is a huge part of what makes your stay so wonderful. I’ve never encountered such impeccable and friendly service. They truly make you feel like a queen (or king). At one point I ordered room service and it looked like something straight out of the movies. The meal was wheeled in on a cart that turned into a table. On it was a tablecloth, elegant dishes, and even a vase with real flowers. The employee actually set the chair (from the desk in the room) at the table for me to sit in, poured my soda, and asked if I would like for them to serve my food that was right in front of me. I was a little taken aback at such a question since obviously my hands weren’t broken and I could manage myself. I graciously thanked (and tipped) the person, and after they left, wondered how often they did indeed serve guests their food. I had ordered pizza, by the way; very classy.
During my stay I had a lot of fun. I went on a tour of the bunker, which was fascinating. However, I wasn’t allowed to take my camera so you can imagine my disappointment. I also tried my luck at the casino and went shopping at all the boutiques. I’ll warn you that both can end up hurting your wallet if you’re not careful, though I don’t suppose that’s something that most Greenbrier patrons even worry about. I spent a great deal of time exploring the property and the inside of the resort snapping pictures. Since I was only there for a few days, I didn’t really get to see and do all of the things The Greenbrier has to offer. For instance, I didn’t get a chance to go to the spa, which I understand is rather unfortunate due to high recommendations. Perhaps if I ever go back, I’ll have more time to do so.
I will concede that I had an excellent time. If you ever have the chance to stay at The Greenbrier, it’s quite the experience. It’s a great place to take it all in and enjoy yourself, just be sure to tip those that make your stay so outstanding.
