This is an image of a street in downtown Charleston, WV. After dark it evidently becomes a temporary resting spot for many homeless individuals in the area. Well, I presume as such from personal experience when I stopped for an impromptu photo shoot. Before Kendall and I could even step foot out of the truck we were approached by a man in need of spare change. We also noticed several other bedraggled persons that seemed as though they could have used some change as well, or a hot meal and a hug.
Kendall was a little uneasy and not overly thrilled at my insistence to photograph this city street in the dark. I can’t say I blame him since he is my underpaid body guard after all. It’s also pretty hard to be inconspicuous with a large camera and a tripod – we sort of stuck out. However, Kendall is a good sport and humors my frequent off the wall photo op requests.
I’m always on the lookout for something to photograph, and this location spoke to me for some reason. After the realization that there were a number of unfortunate souls temporarily inhabiting the recesses of the buildings and the sidewalks, it spoke to me even more so.
