September is my favorite time to visit the beach. It’s the end of the season so the beach isn’t swarming with people, the heat isn’t as sweltering, and the rates are a little easier on the wallet. My birthday is also in September and I personally think that celebrating another year of life while playing in the sand and sun is just the way to go. We have a terrific custom of going to the beach with my friend, Courtney, nearly every year around my birthday (we missed a couple of years due to pregnancies). I’m happy to report that we picked up the tradition again earlier this month – with kiddos in tow this time. Our two little ones running around certainly made for a different kind of vacation than we used to have, but we had a blast and the toddlers were exceedingly entertaining.
Our families stayed together in a posh ocean front condo at Tybee Island, GA. This was a new location for us and we were very pleased with our findings. Usually when we are beach bound we travel to North Carolina so this was rather new and exciting. The change of scenery was nice and we were enamored with all the palm trees and the fact that the beach was so flat and spacious (a stark contrast to the dunes we are used to seeing). I have to say it made toting all the beach gear back and forth quite a bit easier.
Tybee Island is beautiful. It has a small town atmosphere, but the perk of being only 20 minutes away from Savannah, GA. Of course we spent most of our time enjoying the beach (weather permitting). Very little shopping was done, but we did have some scrumptious meals at a couple of different restaurants. The seafood-lovers in the bunch were really quite pleased with the places we tried. I don’t eat anything that swims, so I can’t personally vouch for that sort of thing.
Unfortunately, we were only able to stay for a few days and we didn’t get to see everything I would have liked. Not to mention that the weather was rather uncooperative. However, I hope to return soon because there were a lot of things I wanted to explore. There were lighthouses I didn’t get to investigate, additional restaurants I would have liked to try out, and various shops I wouldn’t have minded browsing through. A trip to Fort Pulaski National Monument would have been pretty neat too. Alas, time and Mother Nature were not on our side, so perhaps on another trip.
No doubt about it; I need to plan a return stay so that I can better explore all that Tybee Island has to offer. Considering how well we liked the beach, town, and condo I don’t think it will be hard to convince everyone we should go back – maybe next year…?
