I started believing in “pennies from heaven” today.

On this date four years ago a friend of mine, also named Rachel, passed away after several grueling years of battling cancer.  She was only thirty.  Needless to say, her struggle and untimely death affected her family and friends a great deal.

I frequently see her parents at Olivia’s preschool and we always chat.  However, today when I saw Rachel’s father I didn’t really know what to say…  He knew I remembered and thanked me for it.  I gave him a great big hug hoping it would somehow offer comfort.  We both had tears in our eyes and since conversation seemed too difficult, we parted to go on with our day.

Immediately afterwards, as I crossed the parking lot something caught my eye.  A bright shiny penny gleamed at me from the damp pavement.  I marveled at the coincidence and picked it up.  Upon closer inspection, I also noticed that it is dated the year that Rachel and I graduated from high school …funny.

It may seem silly, but I choose to believe that this particular penny is from Rachel.  I’m well aware that it’s likely a mere coincidence, but where is the mystery and amusement in that?
