Charleston, WV is only about an hour away from my house, and I regrettably don’t visit it as often as I’d like. I find this somewhat odd since the bustling city holds a great deal of intrigue for me and yet, after 20 years of living here, I have failed to experience all that Charleston has to offer.
For instance, I have yet to explore the state capitol, I have never been to a concert at the Civic Center, nor have I been to any of the fine productions that the Clay Center puts on. The city also has a great art community with several festivals each year, all of which I am sorry to say I’ve never attended. Not to mention the numerous places and the architecture that I’d like to photograph. Furthermore, I have also only ever visited the Sacred Heart Co-Cathedral once for a ceremony. This is certainly a place I would like to visit again at leisure.
I ponder at my lack of exploring this fine city and the only conclusion that I can muster is simply that when I do visit Charleston, I am usually on a mission of some sort. More often than not, that quest involves the dreaded task of shopping. Occasionally I have attended conferences there, but sadly found little time for anything other than seminars and networking. Frequently, I merely get a glance at the large buildings and gold dome of the capitol as I journey forth by plane from the airport, or speed by down the highway going to destinations beyond.
It’s a shame. I think I will make a conscious effort to enjoy all that Charleston has to offer instead of merely passing through it. Perhaps in doing so, I will finally experience some of the above attractions and more.
