Uptown Downtown

Uptown Downtown is my cup of tea; which is exactly how my sister-in-law phrased it when she recommended that I pay them a visit.  She was absolutely right.  Naturally; since I have a soft spot for unique and locally owned businesses, and I like to tout and promote them whenever possible.

Truth be told, this shop has been on my list since they opened this past November and I was excited to have a little time to go check it out the other day.  Uptown Downtown is located on Main Street in Sophia, WV.  And I’m sorry that I didn’t pay them a visit sooner, as I soon discovered they have an array of fun items to peruse through.  The merchandise is heavily focused on fun vintage pieces and goods that are made in WV and the USA (major kudos in my book).

One of their big sellers is furniture that has been refurbished using chalk mineral paint and a little bit of creativity.  In fact, one of my favorite pieces in the store was an antique trunk that had been given a fresh new look with white paint and lined on the inside with papers from an old fashion magazine.  Uptown Downtown is also the only retailer in the area to carry Dixie Belle chalk mineral paint for those interested in undertaking their own projects.  Lena, the owner, proudly told me that this particular line of paint is not only affordable and easy to use; it’s also made in the USA.

Some other fun finds were metal cutouts in various shapes (including the state of WV) that are made from the roofs of old barns or reclaimed barrels, vibrant Blenko Glass vessels, handmade soaps and lotions, candles that smell good enough to eat, jewelry made from dismantled tin cans created by Lena herself (very cool), and of course one of my favorites: vintage cameras.  Also, if you ever plan to attend the Kentucky Derby, or find yourself in need of a spiffy hat, this is the shop to visit.  Amid all the handmade items, fun things, and antique treasures, Uptown Downtown has a generous selection of snazzy hats and vintage clothing.

If this sounds like your cup of tea too, then cheers – I recommend you check out Uptown Downtown.  You’re sure to find something fun.  You might also want to like their Facebook page for updates on sales and new merchandise.
