I have a new coworker! She is super sweet, but also kinda distracting… She is very vocal and doesn’t seem to appreciate personal space. And don’t tell her I said so, but she is rather spoiled and a bit bougie. Thankfully, my new office companion is a cat, because I also love her to pieces, and that, along with all the cuddles, would be totally inappropriate if she were a person.
I’d like you to meet Maya, our, not so little, Maine Coon kitty. If you’ve never heard of a Maine Coon cat (which was me not long ago), they grow to be quite large – like 20 or 30 pounds large. We’re basically now owners of a small lion. And if you had asked me six months ago if I ever thought I’d like to have a purebred animal, I would have said, “heck no!” First, because I didn’t want any kind of pet at all, and secondly, because you can go to the pound and get a free one.
My husband, Kendall, blames his sister for our new fuzzy addition to the family because she sent me a picture of the cutest kitten I’d ever seen (spoiler alert, it was Maya). Then it snowballed from there. I showed Kendall the picture and made a comment about his sister trying to get us to join the Maine Coon club (she has two). And Kendall replied, much to my astonishment, that since I wouldn’t let our daughter have a puppy, maybe we could get this cat… I believe my exact words were, “Are you out of your dang mind?!”
Apparently, we both were, since we had a family meeting with our daughter, Olivia, and all three of us voted to get this adorable kitten. Though I will say that it was a great compromise. Maine Coons are considered the “dog of the cat world” and thus come with some perks. You can teach them to play fetch, walk on a leash, and they are very sweet natured. Maya will also grow to be about the size of a small dog and requires waaaaay less maintenance. And one of the biggest selling points was that Maine Coons don’t shed as much, or bother people with cat allergies (I know, it’s weird).
Admittedly, it was love at first sight and I’m really glad we decided to get Maya. Olivia, has been beyond ecstatic. When she’s home, Maya’s feet rarely touch the ground. And I really love this kitty too. She keeps me company during the day, and I am definitely her “person” since she follows me around the house and either sits with me, or on me, while I work. And warm kitty cuddles, with motorboat purrs, just make your day brighter. Kendall, on the other hand, has mixed feelings about her… Maya likes to torment Kendall by randomly attacking him and does all sorts of crazy antics generally aimed towards him. Personally, I think this is absolutely hysterical and love her a little more for it, hahaha.
So… yes; I just adore my new kitten coworker, even if she is distracting. We’ve become quite close. I’ve also decided to embrace the “crazy cat lady” title since I was already crazy and simply just needed a cat. And you’d better believe I’m going to take Maya for walks. We’ve already been practicing!
