found art: outline of bird created with rocks and natural objects

This Nature Art Scavenger Hunt activity was actually created on the fly to entertain my daughter, and to more or less bribe her to go on a hike while it was an unseasonably warm winter day. And to my great amusement, my cousin (a grown-ass adult) wanted to “play” as well. So, while I had the two of them decorate paper lunch bags, I hastily made a list of things to look for on my phone. (Truth be told, I would have “played” too if I hadn’t been making up things as we went along, haha.) I dare say it was a total success. Though it definitely made for a very sloooow “hike.”

The gist is pretty simple, I made up a list of things for them to collect in their bags. At the end of our hike (or leisurely meandering through the woods), they made works of art using their found objects, preserved the memory by taking a photo of their creations, and then left their artwork for others to enjoy. It’s a super simple way to get outside and have some fun. (Even if it’s not as much exercise as actually hiking.)

Since everyone enjoyed this experience so much, I decided to make an official game of it for the blog with an updated list, directions, and fancy graphics. Feel free to download this scavenger hunt list and start your own outside adventure. It’s sure to be a blast. (I merely ask that everyone takes care to leave no trace and respect nature.)

Happy hunting!!

PS: The youngest member of the team got a bit carried away with her collection of rocks, as you can probably see in the image above. Though she created a very adorable little bird picture out of them, if I do say so myself, ha.

🙂
