Want to make a homemade jar full of awesome goodness? And I’m not talking about anything edible because goodness knows you won’t catch me canning anything (that is an art completely lost on me). But I do excel when it comes to crafts. And today’s project, while technically featured in the Kiddo Corner section, is one that both adults and kids will appreciate. It’s also ridiculously easy and can be tweaked in various fun ways.
You might be wondering where I’m going with this… It’s called a Kindness Jar. This particular one was created by my daughter (after our Kindness Elves prompted her to make one last December) and I was the happy recipient. It sits on my bookshelf in my office nook next to my tiny little trophy that claims I’m the “#1 Mommy.” Handmade kiddo gifts are the best! And this one is certainly no exception.
While the concept is super simple, don’t underestimate the beauty of this craft and gift. Not only does it touch the heart of whomever you give it to, it also teaches the importance of kindness and how words and positivity are powerful. I honestly can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t love to receive a Kindness Jar.
How to make a Kindness Jar…
Supplies:
- Jar
- Writing utensil
- Small pieces of paper (you can use this printable if you like)
- Embellishments such as stickers, confetti, ribbon, etc.
Directions:
First, decide who will be the recipient of the Kindness Jar. Then, have your kiddo brainstorm about all the kind things they would like to say to the person. Next, write all the compliments and words of encouragement down on the pieces of paper. (If your kiddo needs help writing or spelling, that’s totally okay.) The slips of paper can be decorated if you decide to get really into it, and adding some special touches to the jar is definitely recommended. Stickers, ribbon, and even confetti make for some great embellishments. All that’s left after that is to make someone’s day by giving it to them!
An alternate spin #1…
Instead of having your kiddo make one, you could make a Kindness Jar for them.
An alternate spin #2…
You could create a Kindness Jar for yourself and fill it full of positive affirmations.
An alternate spin #3…
You could create a Kindness Jar as a family. In this case, everyone contributes to the jar on occasion, and especially whenever they notice another family member doing a small act of kindness. At the end of the week or month, you can take them all out and read them together.
