cup of coffee next to a photo coaster

This Photo Fun project is so easy that I feel a little silly explaining it. However, I still think it’s a great one to share because the end result makes for an awesome personalized gift, or simply something fun for your own home. So, today… we are making photo coasters! (Or cute artwork if you don’t want to set cups on them.)

You may have noticed that I used one of my Happy Grams for this project (PS: you can get your own for free here), but family photos, portraits, quotes, and artistic images all work splendidly! It just depends on what you would like to use, or who you might be making the coasters for.

Let’s get creative!

Supplies:

  • Printed photos
  • Ceramic tiles (4inx4in work great)
  • E6000 glue
  • Mod Podge
  • A large paintbrush
  • Felt pads
  • Scissors

Directions:

First, ready your working space. (I like to put down a paper towel on my counter in case of spills.) Next, cut your photo to fit on the ceramic tile, giving enough space for the tile to peek out along the sides to create a boarder. If you want to get all artsy about it, you can tear (instead of cut) the edges. Once you have your photo trimmed to the desired size, glue it to the tile and allow for time to dry. Then, paint the entire tile (photo and all) with a few layers of Mod Podge. (Again, allow for drying time in between coats.) Last, stick felt pads on the bottom in each corner to prevent the scuffing of any tables during use. Repeat these steps to make a set of four.

PS: If you are using people pictures, you could use some basic white tiles and cut your photo prints in a fat rectangle (instead of a square) and leave more tile exposed at the bottom to create the impression of a Polaroid print.

PPS: My handy-dandy hubby, and ever the expert craftsman, suggested that I could have used epoxy paint instead of Mod Podge to better seal the coaster. Since I’d already finished the project, maybe I’ll try that next time. Thought I’d throw that out there, though I can’t personally attest to the results…

Have fun!

🙂
