My favorite kind of present is an adventure! So, this year, Kendall and I went on a weekend trip to Maryland as our Christmas gift to each other. I personally love this “gifting” option (which we do frequently) not only because it’s fun, but also because Kendall is the hardest person on Earth to shop for. He doesn’t care about stuff and never really wants anything unless it’s something huge – like a boat… (And frankly, he’d better ask Santa if that can fit in his bag.) We changed our minds about the destination a few times, but finally decided on the Rocky Gap Casino and Resort. So, we found ourselves a babysitter, and took off on an extended (and long overdue) “date night.”
I have to say, good ‘ol Rocky Gap did not disappoint. (If you now have the Rocky Top song stuck in your head, we’re kindred spirits, ha.) As I’ve mentioned before, Kendall has a knack for finding and booking great accommodations, and this was no exception. The hotel was clean and nice, and our room would have been a college kid’s dream. It had a bedroom and a living room area. But since we’re “old” we opted to chill rather than throw a big party.
Kendall’s favorite part was the casino. I didn’t feed much money to the slot machines because all they did was keep it anyway. However, Kendall had much better luck. (Thank goodness; he’s a bigger spender than me.) And no, we didn’t come home any richer. It’s almost like they don’t want you to win… Kendall decided to give Black Jack a try before we left, which was pretty fun (and better chances). I even think I’ll play next time now that I know some of the rules. Table games just seem so freak’n complicated! Honestly, I should study up on how to play though because I’m a kick ass card player. If only they had a rummy table games…
I can’t decide which was my favorite part – the food or the massage. Obviously, the massage was fabulous. I mean who doesn’t love a massage?! Oh right, Kendall. I talked him into getting one and he deemed it “overrated.” I couldn’t believe it! Silly man. I, on the other hand, thought it was lovely and quite relaxing. And if you’re thinking of putting this place on your list, you might like to know that they have a full spa there with all sorts of services. I can vouch that the massages are quite nice – regardless of what Kendall says.
I also really loved the food there; especially at the Lakeside restaurant downstairs. Everything I had was so delicious, and I’d go back for the cheesecake alone! Seriously, they do magical stuff to their cheesecake like brûlée the top of it (which is a fancy term for burnt sugar) and serve it with some kind of raspberry gooey goodness. It was ahhhhmazing! Actually, I liked everything I ate at all three of the restaurants there. For breakfast, I enjoyed a latte and scone by the fireplace in the lobby. (Yum; I adore scones!) And we also thought lunch at the bar and grill was pretty tasty too. So yes; the food there was aces in my book.
In all, it was a great little getaway and weekend trip. We had a fantastic time, even if we didn’t come home with extra money. It’s definitely a place I’d suggest putting on your list. I should also note that if you visit in the warmer months, the resort is located inside of Rocky Gap State Park, and it has a big beautiful lake as well as a golf course.
If you decide to try your hand at this location, I wish you luck and hope you go home richer!
