a button bouquet in a spool for a vase

This adorable little button bouquet is sure to put a smile on any recipient’s face; and it’s fun to make! It’s also a project that can easily be completed by younger kiddos, and still appeal to older ones. (I might suggest pipe cleaners for the younger kids.)

With Mother’s Day coming up, I also designed this cute card that says, “Moms are like buttons… They hold everything together.” Simply print it out, fold, and your kiddo can color it.

If your kiddo is younger, they might need some assistance, but creating this craft together just might make it a more meaningful gift anyway (even if it’s not a surprise).

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Buttons of various sizes
  • Green jewelry wire or pipe cleaners
  • Beads
  • A spool
  • Scissors
  • Ribbon, string, or thread

Directions:

Using a scissors (or wire cutters, if you have them), cut the jewelry wire into lengths of six inches (or more depending on how long you want the stems) and gently bend in half. Next, stack two to three buttons on top of each other and thread the wire through the button holes. Once the U-shaped wire is through the buttons, pinch the wire at the back and start twisting to make the stem. Repeat as needed for the amount of button flowers you’d like to make. You can also use beads by simply adding a few to the U-shaped wire and twisting for a short section, add some more beads to each side, then twist again, and repeat until you have the look you want. After you create your flowers, you can decorate your spool by tying a ribbon around it, or wrapping it with thread (or string). Now, you get to play florist and arrange your button bouquet into the spool. It may help to shove a piece of ribbon down into the hole first so that your stems don’t fall out the bottom. Just like real flowers, cut them to the desired lengths to make a staggered arrangement and place them in their “vase.” Then bend and twist the stems and flowers however you like.

Have fun!
