The Mardi Gras Casino & Resort makes for a fun date night! (My hubby really likes it, so I recently took him to celebrate his birthday.) We’re not big gamblers or high-rollers by any means, but it’s a great venue to visit on occasion if you’re in the mood for something different, or when date night needs a remix.
The ambiance is fun and Mardi Gras themed (obviously). The vibe is totally casual, but there’s no harm in dressing up if you want an excuse to wear something special. (Especially if you go on Kentucky Derby night; be sure to wear a hat!) As is typical, there are slot machines aplenty that light up the interior with a neon glow to lure in folks wishing to try their fortune (or lose it). And they also have an array of table games as well for folks who actually know how to play those. (I find most of them utterly baffling.)
Of course, there are a few bars and restaurants strategically placed throughout. The Café Orleans used to be my favorite place to grab a bite to eat since they have tasty hotdogs. That is, until this past time – when we upped our game and made reservations at The French Quarter. Let me tell you… dinner was amazing!! I highly recommend their filet, paired with asparagus and whipped potatoes. Kendall enjoyed his meal as well, and especially liked the lobster chowder. My only complaint is that the casino no longer has the little café (with yummy treats). Because seriously, I don’t want a mixed drink; I want a latte! I need caffeine, not alcohol. Thank goodness they at least serve regular coffee at the bars because we were up way past my bedtime!
We had a really good time though (even if I thought I was going to turn into a pumpkin). Instead of hitting the slot machines, we played table games the whole night – which totally made me feel like such a grown up! (Haha!) I wasn’t confident in my math skill being quick enough to try Black Jack, but Kendall taught me how to play three card poker and that turned out to be a lot of fun. Plus, I feel like you have better odds with cards than pushing a button on a machine… Not that we came away with extra money, but I think I did pretty well since everyone else kept having to “change in” for more chips and I never did. Once, I even won over $25 on a hand, and I was so excited about obtaining my new green colored chip! (Everyone at the table thought this was comical since they were all betting much higher stakes than I was – or maybe it was my happy dance…)
In all, it was a great trip. I got to eat yummy food and play cards. That definitely qualifies as a fantastic time in my book. Though I was a little disappointed that I never did get that elusive royal flush (which supposedly won you 40 grand). But we did at least walk away with some chips left, which is probably more than many folks could say that evening.
So, if you’re in the mood to try your luck, or heck… just have a fantastic dinner, this place doesn’t disappoint.
PS: Pro tip… when you go to a casino, take a set amount of cash that you don’t care to lose (because you likely will). Don’t go over that amount, and definitely don’t use a debit or credit card.
