Depending on how “extra” you like to get around the holidays, this is a fun craft to do with the kiddos (or even other adults). It’s super easy, and only requires three basic ingredients that you’re sure to already have in your kitchen.
Simply follow the directions below to make some cute dough ornaments of your own (and some memorable moments too). Since I don’t have many cookie cutters to my name, I just went with what I had (a set of stars). I have to say, I especially like the cutout design that was accomplished by using a smaller star cookie cutter inside a larger one. And I used a fake evergreen branch to press into the dough to give it a textured look. (Doilies or lace work great too.) Once baked, I painted the ornaments white, then added red and green paint for the greenery and berries, and then applied a top coat of shimmery paint. And voilà! There you have it…
Again, this is a fun and easy craft that doesn’t require much effort or supplies, but offers a fantastic end product. You’ll love how these will look hanging on your tree, and the happy moments they remind you of as well.
Materials:
- Cookie cutters
- Parchment paper
- Rolling pin
- Straw
- Embellishments (such as, string, paint, glitter, etc.)
Ingredients:
- 2 cups of flour
- 1/2 cup of salt
- 3/4 cups of water
Directions:
In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt together, and then slowly add in the water. Knead the mixture until dough forms. Next place a ball of dough between two pieces of parchment paper and roll out flat (to the thickness of about one inch). Then, peel off the parchment paper and use cookie cutters to cut out shapes. If you want your shapes to be ornaments, use a straw to cut holes in the tops (before baking!). Place the cutouts onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Once you have your baking sheet full (leaving enough space in between pieces), bake at 300 degrees for about an hour (or until hard). After your ornaments have been baked and cooled, you can add paint, glitter, string, and whatever embellishments you like.
PS: If you have more than two or three people crafting together, you can double the recipe.
PPS: I should also note that Olivia made a cute 3D snowman as well, so feel free to get creative!
