There for a while, Olivia always had stars in her pocket. As in, paper throwing stars – not cute sparkly gems or anything. Although, she did spiff up these throwing stars with fancy designs, and I have to say they were remarkably pretty. (I’m raising a creative ninja – no damsels in distress in our house.) She would fold these paper throwing stars with impressive precision and speed, and we quite literally had them all over the house. It was like we lived in a paper throwing star factory. She’d have them stuffed in her backpack, her pockets, and all over her room. And as anyone with kids knows, such things also make their way into the rest of the house as well. From time to time, we would gather them up and have a ninja battle and throw them at each other (a bit like an indoor snowball fight, minus the snow). That was always a blast! They were too small to knock anything over, and were relatively harmless. (Probably a good thing since we don’t have the best aim.) We also discovered that the cat thought they were fun toys as well, which only added to our amusement.
Given how much Olivia enjoyed making these little throwing stars, and playing with them, I thought I would share this how-to guide in the Kiddo Corner. I should note that she hasn’t really outgrown her love of making them either – nor we of flinging them at each other… ha. So clearly, they’re still a hit, and I’m sure other kiddos are likely to be on the same page. (See what I did there…?)
Also, you’ll probably find it amusing to know that I tried to make my own throwing stars for this post and failed spectacularly! It’s a tad embarrassing… So, I recruited Sensei Olivia and her origami skills to help me make a how-to video. I did my best to narrate (since Olivia wasn’t keen on talking) and go slowly through the steps. Because if you’re like me, you find it positively irritating when all the videos online go through their directions at Mach speed.
So, if you, or your kiddo, would like to make some paper throwing stars of your own, check out the video below. I personally think they beat Nerf guns hands down. I like the fun creative aspect in addition to the play skirmishes – and all you need is paper so they barely cost a thing. (One piece of printer paper makes two stars.)
I hope you have fun with this!!
