pieces of fancy heart paper with sweet notes written on them

This fun little tradition is sure to boost your kiddo’s self-esteem and make them feel extra loved. (Side note: it might be a sweet idea for adults too, depending on the person. Frankly, I’d prefer this over flowers or jewelry.) And while this is an awesome Valentine’s themed practice, it’s actually great to do any time of the year – particularly birthdays, big milestones, or other holidays.

The idea is super simple… From February first through Valentine’s Day, tape a little note on your child’s door each day. So, after two weeks (or at the end of the month, if you decide to go the whole nine yards), your kiddo has happy notes and positive affirmations, from you, plastered all over their bedroom door. If you have older kids, I caution that they may think it’s corny or get embarrassed. Though, it’s also possible that they secretly like it. You’ll simply have to make a judgement call. I can say that if you have little kids, they’re going to LOVE it.

I’ve included some suggestions below to get you started, but certainly make up your own uplifting messages as you like. It’s important that they are specific to your child, sincere, and in your handwriting. Also, be sure to use washi tape so that you don’t mess up the paint on their door (because that would be a total bummer).

I hope you and your family have fun with this, and that your kiddo looks forward to their new note each day. It’s a great way to increase their confidence, and make them feel loved and seen.
