When the weather gets cooler, and especially when the snow starts to fly, it’s officially hot cocoa season. In our house, we tend to get into the whole hot chocolate scene rather enthusiastically. We have ALL the yummy toppings, cute mugs, and most recently, a tasty homemade cocoa recipe. Given our affinity for this chocolatey treat, Olivia and I decided to experiment in the kitchen one day and created our own recipe. It turned out pretty yummy, if I do say so myself.

Check out the recipe below. It also makes for a cute gift if you put it in a mason jar and top it with layers of chocolate chips and little marshmallows (and a ribbon, of course).

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 Cup of regular cocoa powder (we used Ghirardelli Premium Baking Cocoa)
  • 1/2 Cup of dark cocoa powder (we used Hershey’s Special Dark)
  • 1 + 1/4 Cup of sugar
  • 1 Cup of dry milk
  • 1/4 Cup of powdered sugar

Directions:

Mix all the ingredients in a large bowl. Once thoroughly blended, store in a glass jar or Tupperware container. To make a cup of hot cocoa, use 4 – 5 generous teaspoons of the mix per 8oz of hot water (or milk) and stir well. Top with whipped cream, marshmallows, chocolate chips, sprinkles, or whatever garnishes suit your fancy. It also tastes yummy if you add a drop of vanilla extract to your cup – and/or a shot of Baileys Irish Cream. (Just saying…) Enjoy!

🙂
