Last weekend Kendall, Olivia and I took a short road trip to Hinton, WV. It’s actually a fun place to visit, but our main purpose for going was to get Olivia to take a nap in the car. It’s an age old trick that tends to work most of the time… Occasionally it backfires though since she’s not all that fond of the car and “voices” her dismay in high octaves. Fortunately for us it worked this time.
Hinton is a quaint little river town that I’ve been to more times than I could possibly count. It’s a great driving destination if you like curvy and scenic roads (there is really no easy way to get there), the river is pretty, fishing is good, and the Bluestone Dam is pretty neat too. There are also a few really yummy restaurants to dine at as well. Kendall’s family frequently goes to Hinton just to eat at Kirk’s. My favorite place to eat is the Dairy Queen. For those of you who are not familiar with this particular DQ, you may think this is absurd. However, the locals and citizens of surrounding areas will proclaim that it is the best Dairy Queen – ever. I kid you not. Their hot dogs are divine!
Although I’ve never really had the opportunity to investigate, downtown Hinton also has some fun shops if you’re in need of a little retail therapy. Oddly enough, I’ve strolled around and taken photos of that area, but never actually ventured inside any of the establishments. Mostly this is because when I’m in Hinton I’m scouting around looking for things to photograph, places to eat, areas to fish, or driving just to drive.
Hinton is great because it can either be your destination or a stop along the way to various other places that are nearby, such as: Sandstone Falls, Bluestone Lake and State Park, Pipestem Resort State Park, the Pipestem Drive-In Theater, and many other places. (Most of which I’m sure to be writing about in the future.) You don’t have to just read about it though; I recommend getting out and exploring all of these places in person. Happy trails.
